Bafel Jalal Talabani, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, met with British Consul General Andrew Bizley in Sulaymaniyah to discuss recent political and economic developments, emphasizing the implementation of the Kurdistan-Baghdad salary agreement and resumption of oil exports.

The leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) met with the British Consul General in Sulaymaniyah on Monday to discuss ongoing political and economic developments between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. The meeting comes amid recent agreements between the Kurdistan Regional Government and Baghdad regarding salary payments and oil export arrangements.

Bafel Jalal Talabani welcomed Andrew Bizley, the British Consul General to the Kurdistan Region, at the PUK headquarters in Sulaymaniyah. The meeting, attended by Shallaw Kosrat Rasul, focused on the latest political and economic developments affecting the region.

The discussions emphasized the importance of coordination and cooperation between all parties in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq to overcome existing challenges. Both officials stressed the need for continued dialogue and partnership in addressing regional issues.

Recent Agreement Implementation Critical

The new understanding between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad formed the main topic of conversation during the meeting. Talabani explained that Kurdish representatives had traveled to Baghdad and engaged in discussions with relevant parties to reach an agreement on salary disbursements.

“We went to Baghdad as representatives of the Kurdistan people and held talks with concerned parties to reach an understanding on salary payments, because salary recipients are in a difficult situation,” Talabani stated during the meeting. He expressed hope that no obstacles would be created now that it was time for implementation.

The PUK leader emphasized the urgent need to address the financial hardships faced by civil servants across the Kurdistan Region. Recent developments suggest that agreements have been reached to ensure uninterrupted salary payments for Kurdistan Region civil servants, bringing relief to thousands of employees who have experienced delayed payments.

Talabani also highlighted the importance of resuming oil exports as quickly as possible, noting that this would be crucial for the region’s economic stability. The oil export mechanism has been identified as a key component of recent agreements between Erbil and Baghdad.

Commitment to Dialogue-Based Solutions

During the meeting, the PUK leader reaffirmed his party’s commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation. He emphasized that the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan believes in a policy of solving problems through negotiations and diplomatic engagement.

“The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan believes in the policy of solving problems through dialogue, and our efforts are aimed at protecting the constitutional rights of salary recipients,” Talabani declared. This approach reflects the party’s longstanding position on managing relations with Baghdad through peaceful means and constructive engagement.

The meeting also covered broader regional cooperation, with both officials discussing ways to strengthen ties between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom. The British Consul General’s visit underscores the continued international interest in the Kurdistan Region’s political and economic development.

Talabani’s statements reflect growing optimism about the implementation of recent agreements with Baghdad. However, he cautioned that success would depend on all parties fulfilling their commitments without creating new barriers to progress.

The discussion between the Kurdish leader and British diplomat comes at a crucial time for the Kurdistan Region, as it seeks to stabilize its finances and maintain good relations with both Baghdad and international partners. The emphasis on dialogue and cooperation suggests a pragmatic approach to addressing ongoing challenges while working toward sustainable solutions for the region’s future.
