Historic Campus of Sulaimani University Reopened After Major Renovation

The historic old campus of Sulaimani University was officially reopened today in a ceremony marking the institution’s 57th anniversary. Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, inaugurated the renovated campus, which was restored by Anzo Company.

Historic Moment Honors Founder’s Legacy

Today’s reopening ceremony coincided with the 57th anniversary of Sulaimani University’s founding, adding special significance to the occasion. During the ceremony, attendees were presented with the first speech delivered by the late President Mam Jalal following the university’s relocation from Erbil to Sulaimani after the uprising in 1991. The presentation of this historic address served as a poignant reminder of the institution’s resilient journey and the vision of its founder, who established the university in 1992.

The renovation project, completed by Anzo Company, represents a crucial investment in preserving the university’s architectural heritage while modernizing its facilities to meet contemporary educational standards. The old campus holds tremendous historical and symbolic value for the Kurdish community, representing decades of academic achievement and cultural preservation.

Speaking at the reopening ceremony, Kosar Mohammed, President of Sulaimani University, provided insights into the institution’s impressive expansion. The university now comprises 22 colleges and 83 scientific departments, annually graduating thousands of students who go on to serve Kurdish society across various professional fields. This growth reflects the institution’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities and meeting the evolving needs of the region.

Mohammed emphasized that despite the challenges the university has faced throughout its history, it has emerged as a leading educational institution in Iraq and the broader region, maintaining its reputation for academic excellence and innovation.

Transformative Changes Drive International Recognition

The university president highlighted that significant transformations have occurred at Sulaimani University over the past years. These comprehensive changes have yielded remarkable results, with the institution achieving first place among Iraqi universities in international rankings for two consecutive years. This achievement represents a historic milestone for Kurdish higher education.

Looking ahead, Mohammed outlined the university’s ambitious strategic plan for the next years, aimed at achieving further international recognition and advancement.
