In a historic first for both Kurdistan Region and Iraq, Nuxsha Nasih has been appointed as the new Governor of Halabja, becoming the first lady to hold such a position in the region’s history.
On Thursday, March 20, 2025, Nuxsha Nasih was officially inaugurated as the Governor of Halabja during a dignified ceremony held at the Provincial Office. This appointment marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first lady governor in the history of both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
Inauguration Ceremony
The ceremony began with a moment of silence honoring the martyrs of Halabja and was attended by numerous dignitaries, including directors of government institutions, Halabja’s parliamentary representatives, and various stakeholders from different sectors of society.
In her inaugural speech, Governor Nasih warmly welcomed the guests and expressed her gratitude to Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, for entrusting her with this important responsibility. She also extended her appreciation to the former Governor of Halabja, Azad Tofiq, for their collaborative work during his tenure and wished him success in his future endeavors.

Background of Nuxsha Nasih
Born in 1978 in the Hawraman, of Halabja Province, Nuxsha Nasih Ahmad is a Kurdish lady administrator, lawyer, and politician. A law graduate, she previously served as the Director of Biara District from 2008 to 2015. Since March 27, 2016, she has held the position of Mayor of Halabja, before her historic appointment as Governor on March 20, 2025.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of congratulatory messages and floral bouquets from various organizations, which Governor Nasih graciously acknowledged with her thanks.
