Discussions on the New KRG Cabinet
Hoshyar Zebari, a senior member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Political Bureau, characterized the one-on-one meeting between Masrour Barzani and Bafel Talabani as “frank and constructive.” Zebari revealed that the discussions centered on finalizing the new KRG cabinet swiftly, a process critical to ensuring effective governance in the region.
The meeting reflects ongoing negotiations between the KDP and PUK to resolve political challenges and establish a government rooted in partnership and equality. Zebari stated, “The dialogue between the leaders went smoothly, demonstrating a mutual commitment to the region’s prosperity.”
Talabani Meets U.S. Delegation to Address Stability
In a separate meeting in Sulaymaniyah, Bafel Talabani welcomed Victoria Taylor, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iraq and Iran, and her delegation. Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, head of the PUK Relations Bureau, also attended. Discussions focused on the Kurdistan Region’s stability and the broader situation in Iraq.
Talabani outlined the PUK’s dedication to creating a service-oriented and just government, ensuring the rights of the Kurdish people are protected. He stated, “Our goal is to build a government based on equality and genuine partnership, steering clear of conflicts.”
On relations with Baghdad, Talabani emphasized the necessity of adhering to Federal Court decisions concerning salary payments and regional entitlements. “The current impasse cannot continue; a sustainable resolution must be achieved to prioritize the people’s well-being,” he said.
Kurdish Unity and Energy Reforms
The situation in Syria and Rojava featured prominently in Talabani’s discussions. He highlighted the PUK’s efforts to protect all Syrian communities, particularly Kurds who have endured hardships in their pursuit of peace. “Kurdish unity remains central to our strategy,” Talabani affirmed, expressing hope for a brighter future through collaboration.
Energy policies were another critical topic, with Talabani acknowledging past inefficiencies in managing the sector. He advocated for reforms aimed at transforming energy resources into drivers of regional progress and prosperity. “We aim for a unified strategy with Baghdad to serve our people together,” he stated, signaling optimism for future agreements.
By addressing these pressing issues, the meetings demonstrated a shared commitment to resolving challenges and advancing the region toward stability and development.
