United States has officially opened its largest consulate in the Kurdistan Region during a high-level ceremony in Erbil. Attended by senior Kurdish and American officials, the state-of-the-art facility represents America’s most significant diplomatic installation in the region, featuring advanced security systems and marking a new chapter in bilateral strategic partnership.
High-Level Ceremony Marks Historic Opening
The new US consulate in Erbil was inaugurated in the presence of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, KRG Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, and US Deputy Secretary of State Michael Ratigan. The facility represents one of America’s largest diplomatic centers in the region, according to Daban Shadala, Deputy Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Department of Foreign Relations, surpassing several US embassies in neighboring countries.
Nechirvan Barzani emphasized during the opening ceremony that the United States has stood with the Kurdistan Region through its most challenging periods since the 1990s. He recalled the 2003 liberation of Iraq and the 2014 campaign against ISIS, when Peshmerga forces worked alongside Iraqi forces and coalition partners, including the United States, to defeat the terrorist organization. The President characterized the consulate opening as the beginning of a new phase for strengthening relations and establishing new partnerships across various sectors.
Strategic Partnership and Regional Stability
Barzani stressed that the Kurdistan Region aims to serve as a bridge for relations rather than a battleground for conflict, playing an effective role in stabilizing Iraq and the broader region. The Kurdistan Regional Government remains committed to working with Baghdad to resolve all outstanding issues within the constitutional framework, while maintaining its strategic partnership with the United States based on the Iraq-US Strategic Agreement.
Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani described the opening of America’s largest consulate in the Kurdistan Region as a major development, signaling the importance and strength of US-Kurdistan relations both now and in the future. In his meeting with Deputy Secretary Ratigan, Talabani emphasized that the Kurdistan Region and all its governorates welcome stronger and deeper relations with the United States across all sectors, particularly in security, economic, commercial, and cultural domains.

Talabani highlighted that the continuation and recurrence of attacks on the region’s economic infrastructure and energy resources demonstrate the need for sustained and increased coordination between the Kurdistan Region and the United States. He also announced readiness to form a new regional government cabinet based on genuine balance and partnership that serves all citizens and areas of the Kurdistan Region without discrimination. The Deputy Prime Minister thanked the United States for supporting reforms in the Ministry of Peshmerga, emphasizing continuation of the process until achieving a professionally trained, national force free from any party political interference.
Advanced Security Infrastructure and Diplomatic Capacity
The new consulate building is larger than US embassies in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iraq. The facility incorporates anti-drone systems and comprehensive airspace military activity monitoring systems, ensuring the safety of consulate personnel. Construction began in 2018 with the laying of the foundation stone. The United States previously maintained a consulate in the Kurdistan Region located in the Ainkawa area of Erbil governorate, which this new facility replaces with significantly enhanced capacity and security infrastructure.
