Iraq, Kurdistan Region and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan marks the eighth anniversary of President Jalal Talabani’s death with tributes highlighting his six-decade struggle for Kurdish rights and Iraqi democracy. Known as “Iraq’s safety valve,” Mam Jalal served as the nation’s first elected president and remains a unifying figure whose diplomatic achievements and commitment to federalism continue shaping regional politics under his successor’s leadership.

A Revolutionary Leader’s Enduring Impact

Eight years after his passing, President Mam Jalal Talabani’s legacy continues to resonate across Kurdistan, Iraq, and the international community. The PUK’s Political Bureau emphasized his extraordinary six-decade commitment to Kurdish liberation, describing him as a fighter who dedicated his life to securing legitimate Kurdish rights while promoting federalism, democracy, and coexistence in pluralistic Iraq.

Mam Jalal’s leadership proved crucial during pivotal moments including the Halabja chemical attack, the Anfal genocide, and the 1991 uprising. His courage, strategic insight, and negotiating skills elevated the Kurdish cause on the global stage, while his relationships with Eastern, Arab, and Western governments laid groundwork for significant diplomatic achievements. As Iraq’s first elected president and constitutional guardian, he became a unifying presence fostering dialogue and consensus among diverse political parties and communities.

Tributes and Continued Commitment

PUK Vice President Rifaat Abdullah issued a moving tribute describing Mam Jalal as “the leader of all ages and the pride of the nation.” Abdullah emphasized that the late president’s wisdom and political vision remain essential for Iraq and Kurdistan, noting that even rivals continue needing his guidance. The international recognition of the PUK as “the party of Mam Jalal” reflects his enduring influence.

Current PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani continues his father’s policies, particularly regarding resolving issues between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad. Abdullah pledged unwavering loyalty, declaring that the PUK represents a “sacred trust” combining older generations’ experience with youth’s energy. As Iraq approaches parliamentary elections, the party emphasizes correcting governance, advancing reform, and safeguarding citizens’ livelihoods while preparing Kurds to fulfill constitutional responsibilities.

Academic Conference Honors His Legacy

The President Jalal Talabani Foundation, partnering with Sulaymaniyah University, will host an international academic conference exploring Mam Jalal’s thought and policies. Beginning October 3rd—the anniversary of his passing—the conference features over twenty scholarly papers examining his role in Iraq’s peace process, reconstruction efforts, and promotion of human rights and democracy.
Topics include his work strengthening China-Iraq-Kurdistan relations and safeguarding coexistence in Kirkuk Governorate. The conference coincides with the seventh Sulaymaniyah International Book Fair, renamed the President Jalal Talabani Edition. This platform allows scholars, researchers, and policymakers to reflect on how Mam Jalal’s commitment to democratic socialism, environmental protection, and world peace—embodied through his Socialist International vice presidency—continues influencing Kurdistan, Iraq, and the broader Middle Eastern liberation movements.
