Foundation Stone Ceremony Details

Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani officially launched the “First Gene/Seed Bank in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region of Iraq” project during a ceremony held at Hawari Shar Park in Sulaymaniyah city on July 7. The event brought together key government officials and international representatives, demonstrating the collaborative nature of this significant environmental initiative.

The ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Begard Talabani, Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Salah representing the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Iraq, and Dr. Haval Abubakr, Governor of Sulaymaniyah Province. Their presence underscored the multi-institutional support for this groundbreaking conservation project.

The “First Gene/Seed Bank in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region of Iraq” represents a strategic tourism project of considerable importance, with its budget provided entirely by the FAO. This international funding reflects the global significance of preserving Kurdistan’s unique biodiversity and genetic resources for future generations.

Project Scope and Environmental Mission

The “First Gene/Seed Bank in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region of Iraq” project will be implemented across 100 dunums of land, establishing a comprehensive facility dedicated to collecting, preserving, and protecting the genetic heritage of indigenous plants, animals, and living organisms native to Kurdistan and Iraq. This ambitious scope positions the project as a cornerstone of regional environmental conservation efforts.

The primary mission focuses on safeguarding the genetic diversity that represents the authentic heritage of Kurdistan and Iraq’s natural ecosystem. By creating a centralized repository for genetic materials, the project aims to prevent the loss of valuable indigenous species while supporting biodiversity research and conservation initiatives.

The facility will serve as a crucial resource for understanding and maintaining the genetic composition of local flora and fauna, ensuring that future generations can benefit from Kurdistan’s rich natural heritage. This preservation effort addresses growing concerns about environmental degradation and species extinction in the region.

Scientific Research Center and Employment Opportunities

Within the framework of the Gene Bank project, a dedicated scientific research center will be established to conduct comprehensive studies on plants, animals, and other living organisms. This research facility will focus on developing effective conservation methodologies and advancing scientific knowledge about genetic preservation techniques.

The research center will serve as a hub for scientific investigation into protection strategies for endangered species and genetic materials. Scientists and researchers will utilize advanced methodologies to study the characteristics and preservation requirements of various indigenous organisms, contributing to global conservation science.

The project promises to generate significant employment opportunities for specialists in related fields, creating jobs for geneticists, biologists, environmental scientists, and conservation experts. This employment aspect transforms the Gene Bank into not only an environmental initiative but also an economic development project for the region.

The scientific center will provide career opportunities for local and international experts, fostering knowledge exchange and capacity building within Kurdistan’s scientific community. By attracting skilled professionals to the region, the project will contribute to the development of local expertise in genetic conservation and environmental science.

This comprehensive approach ensures that the Gene Bank project serves multiple purposes: environmental conservation, scientific advancement, tourism development, and economic growth, making it a truly strategic initiative for the Kurdistan Region’s sustainable development goals.
