Kurdistan Region Security Forces shot down two drones near Sulaymaniyah’s border area, with Peshmerga forces confirming the incident occurred without casualties as investigations continue into the security breach.
Security Forces Respond to Drone Incursion
Salam Abdul Khaliq, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region Security Agency, announced that two drones crashed in the Tasluja area along Sulaymaniyah’s border. Investigation teams from the regional security agency immediately arrived at the incident site to begin their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the drone downing.
The security spokesperson confirmed that the incident resulted in no loss of life, emphasizing the swift response of security personnel to the potential threat. The drones were successfully neutralized before they could cause any harm to civilian populations or infrastructure in the area.
Peshmerga Forces Confirm Defensive Action
Liwa Ahmad Latif, spokesperson for the 70th Peshmerga Forces, confirmed that both drones flew through the airspace controlled by the 70th Command forces. The Peshmerga units successfully brought down both aircraft as they entered the restricted zone.
Security sources reported that the drones crashed near Sulaymaniyah’s International Exhibition Center, causing a fire to break out in the surrounding area. The proximity to this significant commercial venue raised concerns about potential civilian casualties, though none were reported.
Rafaat Fatih, mayor of Bakrajo district, confirmed that security forces are present at the incident location and have initiated a comprehensive investigation. Emergency response teams quickly contained the fire caused by the drone crashes, preventing spread to nearby structures.
Parliamentary Faction Demands Investigation
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction in Iraq’s Council of Representatives issued a statement regarding the drone incident, characterizing it as a violation of Iraqi and Kurdish territorial sovereignty. The faction called for immediate action from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to establish an investigative committee.
In their official statement, the PUK faction condemned what they described as a “criminal act” involving two explosive-laden drones targeting the 70th Forces’ base in Tasluja, Sulaymaniyah province. They emphasized that such actions threaten regional security and endanger civilian lives.
The parliamentary group highlighted a pattern of similar incidents, noting that Kirkuk province was targeted two days earlier, followed by the Sulaymaniyah attack. This escalation prompted their demand for a high-level investigation committee to uncover the truth behind these security breaches and identify the primary sources of rocket and drone launches.
The PUK faction’s statement stressed the need to protect citizens’ property and national sovereignty, calling for measures to prevent any actions that could destabilize the country’s security and peaceful coexistence. They urged authorities to take decisive steps to safeguard both civilian populations and territorial integrity.
The incident represents a concerning development in regional security, with Kurdish forces demonstrating their readiness to defend airspace while political leaders seek accountability through proper investigative channels. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the origin and intent behind the drone incursion.
