Iran’s newly appointed Consul General in Erbil, Faramarz Asadi, has expressed optimism about the “bright” future of relations between Iran and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. During a meeting with Safeen Dizayee, the Head of the KRG’s Department of Foreign Relations, Asadi emphasized the deep cultural, historical, and economic ties between the two neighbors. His visit follows a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister, signaling Iran’s commitment to enhancing ties with the Kurdistan Region.

Faramarz Asadi officially assumed his role as Iran’s Consul General in Erbil by presenting his credentials to Safeen Dizayee, the Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations. In the meeting, Asadi lauded the “strong” foundations of bilateral relations, rooted in shared cultural, linguistic, ethnic, and historical ties. He described the relationship’s future as “highly promising” and reiterated Iran’s willingness to deepen collaboration with the Kurdistan Region across various sectors.

Ahead of his assignment, Asadi met with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, to outline his proposed plans for his new position. He highlighted the shared values and history between the Iranian and Kurdish peoples, calling for the optimal use of these commonalities to expand cooperation.
