Council’s Role in Addressing Women’s Concerns

On Saturday, during a conference in Baghdad focused on combating violence against women, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani outlined new initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s rights and representation. He announced that the Supreme Council for Women’s Affairs would review all concerns regarding the Personal Status Law amendments. This council, a new body within the government, is tasked with direct planning and executing decisions related to women’s development.

Government Representation and Efforts

Al-Sudani emphasized the substantial representation of women within his administration, including three female ministers, two deputy ministers, 111 women in director general roles, and 47 deputy director generals. This representation underscores the government’s commitment to integrating women into key decision-making positions.

Social Protection and Employment Progress

The Prime Minister also highlighted improvements in the social protection network, noting that the number of women beneficiaries increased by 138,000 from October 2022 to August 2024. Additionally, he reported a significant reduction in the unemployment rate among women, which had been approximately 28% two years ago. However, he acknowledged persistent challenges, such as female illiteracy, which remains at 17%, and outlined ongoing plans to address these issues.

This comprehensive approach demonstrates the government’s dedication to addressing women’s issues and improving their socio-economic status, reflecting a significant shift towards greater gender equity.
