A US military and diplomatic delegation met with Kurdistan officials in Erbil to discuss Peshmerga reform efforts, while Iraq received the first two tactical transport helicopters from Airbus as part of a broader defense acquisition agreement with France.
Strengthening Kurdish-American Defense Partnership
The high-level US military and diplomatic delegation convened with Kurdistan Region officials on Wednesday at the Kurdistan Presidency in Erbil. According to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency, discussions centered primarily on “the reform process and reorganization of the Peshmerga forces.”
The meeting served to reaffirm the importance of ongoing reforms while reviewing progress made thus far. Both parties addressed obstacles facing the initiative and emphasized continued cooperation to ensure successful implementation of the next phases.
“The meeting reaffirmed the importance of the reform process, presented the latest steps, and addressed efforts to solve the obstacles facing it,” the Presidency stated in their official communication.
Beyond military restructuring, participants also examined the broader regional situation and recent developments, though specific details on these topics were not disclosed in the statement.
Iraq Receives First Airbus Military Helicopters
In a significant development for Iraq’s defense capabilities, the Iraqi defense ministry received two tactical transport military helicopters from French aviation manufacturer Airbus on Wednesday. These aircraft represent the initial delivery in a larger acquisition agreement signed last year, which includes the purchase of twelve additional helicopters.
Defense Minister Thabet al-Abbassi explained in a ministry statement that the delivery forms “part of a contract between the Iraqi Ministry of Defense and the French Ministry of Defense, to supply the Army Aviation Command with this type of aircraft, which will be received successively after completing the manufacturing process.”
The minister further revealed that these two helicopters will officially enter service in June, coinciding with celebrations marking the anniversary of the Army Aviation Command’s establishment.
Broader Context of Franco-Iraqi Defense Cooperation
The helicopter acquisition is part of a September 2024 agreement between Iraq and Airbus, encompassing a total of 14 helicopters. The majority will be Airbus H225M helicopters, commonly known as Caracal, which are advanced multipurpose tactical transport aircraft.
This procurement initiative represents a significant element in the strengthening defense relationship between Baghdad and Paris, which gained momentum following high-level diplomatic engagement between French President Emmanuel Macron and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani.
Tahseen al-Khafaji, Director of Media at the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, provided additional details to Rudaw news agency on Wednesday, confirming that according to the agreement’s timeline, Airbus will complete delivery of all 14 helicopters by early next year.
Al-Khafaji specified that the two helicopters that arrived in Baghdad Wednesday will be formally transferred to the Iraqi Air Force on May 26. He also outlined the remaining delivery schedule, noting that six additional helicopters are expected to arrive in Baghdad between June and October.
The modernization of Iraq’s military aviation capabilities comes amid ongoing security challenges in the region and represents a significant investment in the country’s defense infrastructure, while underscoring growing international defense cooperation with European partners.
